About like a local

Like visiting
a friend who lives there.

Why we started

There was a New Zealand
we wanted to show you.

Big package tours follow a fixed route — off the bus, back on the bus — with stops at group restaurants and shopping centres. The truly New Zealand moments easily get lost in between.

Like a Local is built the other way round. We still cover the must-see sights, but we also spend the day the way locals do — a neighbourhood café, a beach walk, a supermarket run and a barbecue back at the house.

What we stand by.

01

Good value, not cheap

We cut needless costs and spend where it counts — on what you really should eat and experience.

02

No forced shopping · no tips

Optional activities are announced before departure, and only those who want to join.

03

Good rest, good energy

Based on two adults per room, we choose well-located 3–4 star hotels or clean holiday homes.

04

Natural travel photos

The photos your guide quietly takes along the way become the best souvenir.

Your guides.

New Zealand citizen guides travel with you like friends — through language barriers, tricky transport and the unexpected.

Guide Marcus holding a big fish caught off the wharf

Marcus

Lead guide · Driving · Fishing · ENTP

An ENTP citizen guide who genuinely loves people — and fish. He couldn’t find a travel company that showed his beloved New Zealand properly, so he started Like a Local himself. From casting a line off the wharf to beaches only locals know, you get the full Marcus energy. Fun guaranteed.

Kevin

Guide · Photography · Drones · eNFJ

Marcus’s younger brother, and an eNFJ with a small e. He loves people, but sometimes he’s the one quietly gazing at the view a little longer. A photography and drone fan — when the weather and location allow, he’ll capture your group from the sky too. A citizen guide who’ll do just about anything for a good flat white, so don’t be shy to ask.
